Your Backup Ran. But Can You Actually Restore From It?

Most businesses have a backup of some kind. Far fewer have ever tried to restore from it. The first real test often comes in the middle of an emergency, which is the worst time to find out something is missing.

A green checkmark that says “backup completed” only tells you that files were copied. It does not tell you that they can be brought back, quickly, in a usable state.

Why Backups Fail When It Matters

  • Missing data: A folder, database, or cloud application was never included in the backup.

  • Corrupted or incomplete copies: The job reports success but the data cannot be read.

  • Backups that are not protected: Ransomware can encrypt or delete backups that are reachable from the main network.

  • Slow recovery: The data exists, but restoring it takes days instead of hours.

  • Nobody knows the process: The one person who understands the restore has left or is unavailable.

How to Test Your Backups

  • Restore a sample file on a regular schedule and open it to confirm it works.

  • Do a larger test that restores a whole system or application to a separate location at least once a year.

  • Time the recovery so you know how long you would be down.

  • Check what is covered, including cloud services such as email and shared files, which are often assumed to be backed up when they are not.

  • Keep a copy that is isolated from the main network, so an attack cannot reach it.

  • Write down the recovery steps and who is responsible for each one.
